Summer Learning Without Stealing Summer
Share
Summer should still feel like summer — bike rides, swimming, popsicles, staying up a little too late, and making memories.
But just 15–20 minutes a day of focused learning can make a tremendous difference when school starts again in the fall. Summer is a wonderful time to help prepare your child or grandchild for academic success.

One of the best ways to motivate children is to let them help set a goal for the summer. Sit down together and talk about one or two skills they want to improve before school starts again. Keep the goals simple, clear, and encouraging.
Then make it fun.
Maybe the reward is:
- a trip for ice cream
- a new book
- a movie night
- staying up late one night
- a special outing with mom, dad, or grandparents
Children are often much more motivated when they can see progress and work toward something exciting.
If you have children or grandchildren heading into kindergarten through fifth grade, here are a few “must-know” skills that can become real game changers for next school year.
| Going Into | Helpful Summer Skills |
|---|---|
| Kindergarten | Recognize and name all alphabet letters (A–Z); count to 20 and understand “how many” |
| 1st Grade | Read simple sentences and sight words; add and subtract within 10 |
| 2nd Grade | Read short stories fluently and retell main ideas; add and subtract within 100 |
| 3rd Grade | Read longer passages and explain meaning; know multiplication and division facts (0–10) |
| 4th Grade | Read and understand chapter books independently; multiply and divide multi-digit numbers and understand fractions |
| 5th Grade | Summarize and compare information from texts; add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and decimals |
The good news? Learning doesn’t have to feel like school.

Read together on the porch. Practice math facts during car rides. Let kids help cook and measure ingredients. Visit the library. Play word games. Make learning part of everyday life.
Those small moments add up more than most parents realize.
